Julia Evans OBE, Chief Executive, BSRIA
Julia took up the role as CE BSRIA in May 2014 and is involved in the development of BSRIA’s future growth and prosperity. Prior to her role at BSRIA, Julia was the CE of the National Federation of Builders.
During her time at the NFB, Julia has worked to secure more favourable conditions for members in a number of areas including public sector procurement, utilities, access to finance, health and safety, training and innovation.
She has also forged close links and partnerships across industry and was the founder of the Construction Alliance. Julia has also maintained a high public profile as a leading spokesperson and commentator on the industry, the economy and Government affairs in the UK and Europe.
Colin Goodwin, Technical Director, BSRIA
Colin joined BSRIA in 2018 and leads the technical development, delivery and focus of BSRIA. His role also encompasses managing BSRIA technical input to regulatory, legislative and parliamentary activity, including energy policies and building regulations.
Colin qualified as a chartered engineer in 1995 and is also a registered European Engineer (EurIng). He is both a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Engineers. He has held board and senior manager positions in FM, energy services and property & construction management. He brings to BSRIA a wide experience in property operations, construction and energy management with both client and contractor businesses.
Prior to joining BSRIA, Colin was Technical Director at Mitie Engineering, formerly Dalkia, leading several business and technical projects in energy and critical engineering, technical facilities management and construction. Colin started his career as an Engineer Officer with P&O, spending eight years in the Merchant Navy prior to working ashore.
He moved into construction in 1987 working initially with AG Manly Ltd in commissioning, project engineering and maintenance and later moving to the Sainsbury Property Company where he held technical management roles, including design, property and facilities management.
Tom Smith BSc (Hons), MBA, CEng MIMechE, Global Director, Property and Buildings, WSP - BSRIA Chairman
Tom Smith has been with WSP since 1994 and has held a number of senior business leadership positions with its UK, Middle East and India regions as well as being closely associated with many of WSP's flagship projects and strategic clients
Since 2010 Tom has focused his efforts on WSP's global agenda and has been instrumental in developing its global culture, connectivity and services. He has worked throughout the Group with regional management to develop global initiatives focused on market sectors, global clients and major project bids. In 2013 Tom joined the Company’s Executive Team, and in January 2014 he was appointed Global Director, Property and Buildings, to focus on achieving WSP's strategic goal of being recognised as the leading Property and Buildings consultancy by 2015.
Tom’s involvement with BSRIA started in 2002 when he joined Council and in 2005 he was asked to join the Board and between 2007 and 2009 was our Chairman. As a building services engineer Tom is passionate about the work BSRIA does and very proud that BSRIA is viewed as the ‘go-to’ industry expert.
Tony Fleming, Technical and Operations Director, Condair plc
Condair plc (formerly JS Humidifiers) are part of the Condair Group, a global manufacturer of commercial and industrial humidification systems. Tony has over 20 years experience in building services & end user applications, systems engineering and manufacturing of products. He is a graduate Mechanical Engineer, also with post graduate studies in management. Originally joining JS Humidifiers in 1995, Tony was appointed as Technical Director In 2005, with responsibility for the commercial engineering and technical leadership of the business. Tony is an active member of the Condair global management team, with particular focus on business strategy, global service and product development. Tony was appointed as a Non-Executive Director with BSRIA in 2010, is also a Fellow of the IMECHE and sits on the University of Portsmouth Industry Liaison Board.
George Adams, Director Energy and Engineering, SPIE Ltd
George commenced work in the Building Services division of Matthew Hall Ltd. in 1973, where he completed a formal engineering apprenticeship and degree studies moving to his current position of Director of Energy and Engineering for SPIE U.K.
George’s business experience ranges from leading major Design and Build London Business Unit with total responsibility, consulting work, designing, managing sites, turnkey design and build work through to engineering leadership of large teams. All with a strong theme of innovation and leadership by example.
The market sectors George has had the pleasure of working in all have a strong emphasis of energy conservation and value solutions.
David Rintoul, Managing Partner Clarkslegal LLP
David qualified as a solicitor in 1989 and advises on all forms of construction and engineering contracts and dispute resolution in the industry. David is a non-executive Director and past non-executive Chairman of BSRIA. He heads the construction and environmental projects group at Clarkslegal LLP, is the firm’s Managing Partner and a Director of Forbury Environmental Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary business.
David is recommended in legal directories as a leading construction lawyer in the Thames Valley and South East regions. Clarkslegal is also top-ranked by those directories for its construction law expertise.
Leslie J Smith, Managing Director, Cudd Bentley Consulting
Leslie has extensive experience in the Building Services sector since entering the industry 38 years ago, after completing an Environmental Engineering Honours Degree at Loughborough University. He is a member of CIBSE and achieved Chartered Engineer Status in 1989.
His early experience involved operations on North Sea Gas platforms and Project Management roles working in the design and build sector, thereby gaining valuable practical knowledge over a four year period to compliment his technical skills. He moved to a Consultancy based design role in 1980 and has remained in this sector during his career.
Leslie is currently Managing Director of Cudd Bentley Consulting Ltd and led a management buyout of practice in 2005. Throughout his career Leslie has maintained an active involvement in the design and delivery of projects which he enjoys. These include major retail and shopping centre developments, award winning commercial offices, mixed use and residential schemes, data centres and leisure developments.
Leslie has maintained a close relationship with BSRIA after working with the Association on the laboratory testing of a project for a client in 2000/1, having been impressed by the quality and enthusiasm with which the work was undertaken.
He has been a Council Member for 10 years, during which he chaired the publications panel for two years. He joined the BSRIA Board in 2009 and completed a 3 year appointment as BSRIA Chairman in October 2014.
Alasdair Donn - Head of Building Performance, Willmott Dixon Group - BSRIA Non-Executive Director
Alasdair joined Willmott Dixon’s Group Sustainability team in early 2007 as Principal Consultant, and now, as Head of Building Performance, manages the team responsible for all support to our construction businesses on building/energy performance on projects across all sectors.
Willmott Dixon devotes its own internal resources to study how its projects perform in use, and Alasdair has been involved in multiple technical assessment projects, POE studies, and process improvement initiatives in the area of building and home energy performance.
Alasdair is a Non-Executive Director of BSRIA, a member of their Soft Landings Technical Network, and is a member of the CIBSE ‘Homes for the Future’ group.
Tina Pringle - Director of Information, NBS
Tina Pringle joined NBS – a global leading technology platform for the built environment in 2014 where she is Director of Technical Information. She is responsible for technical information on a global scale, with a focus on the definition, alignment and delivery of information and structured data for digital construction and the built environment.
After qualifying in International Business and Information Technology, Tina started her career in project management with focus on the design and development aspect of construction. Since then she has gained over 25 years’ experience in construction, built environment consultancy, master planning, through to major capital project development and asset management. Tina now focuses on the digital dimension of the built environment – working with platforms, products and customers to deliver the digital construction information and data requirements of the future.
As well as being a global technical information specialist for the digital construction, Tina is also a member of several built environment industry panels and working groups. She is also a passionate promoter and mentor in STEM subjects with schools, highlighting opportunities that the technology and construction industries offer to young people.
Chris Harty, Head of the School of the Built Environment, University of Reading
Chris Harty is Professor of Technology and Organisation, Head of the School of the Built Environment at the University of Reading.
He has been the Director of two EPSRC Centres and since 2010 Principal Investigator / Lead Academic on over £3.5 million of research funding. He has authored over 50 referred papers, was an Editor of Construction Management and Economics between 2012 and 2017 and is a reviewer for over 30 journals in areas of built environment, organisation and technology management. He is currently a visiting professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, and was previously visiting professor at Copenhagen Business School in Denmark.
Chris has internationally recognised expertise in understanding cultural and strategic change in organisations, implementation of new technologies and working practices, future scenario development and the connection between physical space and working practices.
