Job Descripton

Structural Engineers are part of both the design and construction teams. They ensure that legal guidelines are adhered to and that the requirements for health and safety and environmental directives are met.

Part of their responsibilities involves the use of computer simulation to predict a structures reaction to different conditions, as well as calculating the loads and stresses that different areas of the structure will be subjected to.

Entry Routes and Competencies Required

Degree

  • Accredited by the Institute of Structural Engineers (IStructE)
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • A-Levels (or equivalent) at AAA - CCE including Physics and Maths

Apprenticeship

  • 3 to 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A* - C (or numerical equivalent) including English, Maths and Science

BTEC Higher National Diploma/Certificate or Foundation Degree

Salary Range

Salaries vary depending on experience, the company and location of the job. However, per year, you could expect to earn:

  • Newly trained Engineer - £18,000 - £30,000
  • Trained Engineer with experience - £25,000 - £44,000
  • Senior or Chartered Engineer - £32,000 - £55,000

Professional Qualifications and Career Development

Engineers with a Bachelor's degree can work towards becoming Incorporated with IStructE, whislt Engineers with a Master's degree can work towards becoming Chartered.

Opportunities are also available to progress into roles such as Project Management.
