Katronic KATflow 200 | Ultrasonic flow meter

Contact BSRIA Instrumentation

The KATflow 200 is an easy-to-use, lightweight and compact hand-held clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter. By employing latest transit-time flow measurement technology, the KATflow 200 provides highly accurate and reliable data for both flow velocity and volume flow. Due to its advanced technology, the instrument measures the flow of clean and dirty liquids and liquefied gases within fully filled pipes regardless of the fluid’s electric conductivity.

Not suitable for use on laminated or plated piping.

Instrument rental models come in the following kit configuration:

Katronic KATflow 200 ultrasonic flow meter with K4 N type transducers (10 to 250 mm diameter pipe sizes, -30 to +130 °C  temperature range), chains, case, manual and calibration certificate.

Instrument Solutions also offer as an accessory the K1 N type transducers (50 to 3000 mm diameter pipe sizes, -30 to +130 °C temperature range), mounting fixture with rail & magnets, texture type mounting strap, and calibration certificate.

Features

As the KATflow 200 weighs less than 700 g and has very compact dimensions, it can easily be held in one hand. As a result, it is ideal for the use within difficultly-to-access locations such as manholes or other confined spaces. Furthermore, its high quality IP 65 housing with rubber shock protector makes the flow meter an extremely rugged and robust tool.

The KATflow 200 features several product innovations including a graphical display providing the user with more information on the meter and a diagnostic screen with digital oscilloscope function. As a special feature, the KATflow 200 also shows a real-time graph of the flow data.

The hand-held flow meter can be set up and measurements be obtained within a matter of minutes. This is made possible by the intuitive menu structure and Setup Wizard function of the KATflow 200, which guide the user step by step through the configuration process. Additionally, the flow meter offers the unique Audible Sensor Positioning Assistant - a new intelligent sensor location function which assists the user during the sensor installation process by giving real-time graphical instructions and audible signals.

The KATflow 200 features an internal data logger, which stores all measured and totalised values and parameter sets. The flow meter is supplied with the KATdata+ software which enables the user to download and visualise the flow data on a computer either after the measurement or in real-time using the embedded terminal function. The data can be transferred via the instrument’s RS 232 interface.

The clamp-on flow meter is supplied in an IP 67 rated crush-proof transport case which holds all necessary accessories including chains and clips for sensor installation, coupling paste, download software, RS 232 cable and the operating instructions.

The ultrasonic clamp-on sensors supplied with the KATflow 200 are manufactured with a stainless steel head and sturdy cable conduit and are fully auto detected by the transmitter. They cover a pipe diameter range from 10 mm to 3,000 mm and withstand temperatures from -30 °C to +200 °C. Their clamp-on mounting technique enables the sensors to measure liquid flows non-invasively and non-intrusively from outside the pipe. For this reason there is no need to cut into the pipe and therefore no interruption of flow, no pressure drop, and no risk of leakage at any time.

Main features of the KATflow 200:

  • Unique audible sensor positioning assistant
  • Intuitive menu structure and Setup Wizard
  • Robust, light-weight and compact transmitter
  • Stainless steel clamp-on sensors and cable conduits
  • Measurable flow range: 0.01 m/s to 25 m/s
  • Accuracy on mean flow velocity: +/-0.5 %
  • Accuracy on volume flow: +/-1 to 3%
  • Battery or mains operation
  • Up to 24 h of battery life (fully charged)
  • For any acoustically conductive pipe material
  • For clean and dirty liquids

Important notes

Some models of ultrasonic meters are not suitable for use on various plastic materials such as Polybutylene. Please contact our Hire staff if your application involves these materials for additional advice. Similarly they will not work in galvanised steel or pipes with linings and an alternative measurement technique will be needed in these applications.

The in-use accuracy of ultrasonic flow meters is subject to site conditions such as pipe dimensions, material, transducer location and mounting configuration. Reference to the manufacturer’s instructions is therefore recommended before use to ensure equipment suitability with additional guidance given in BS 8452:2010 - Use of clamp-on (externally mounted) ultrasonic flow-metering techniques for fluid applications – Guide.

Common customer questions & answers

QQuestion How long will the unit run for on its own internal batteries?
AAnswer 24 hours on fully charged batteries. However, on any extended run (>12hours) the external 230V AC / 9V DC power supply should be used to ensure no data loss from the instrumentation. As these are rental units battery life cannot be guaranteed since we don't know the battery usage whilst out on hire.
QQuestion What type of transducer comes with the Instrument Solutions rental Katronic 200 ultrasonic flow meters?
AAnswer The Instrument Solutions rental models come with the K4 N type transducer set which can be used on 10 to 250mm pipes over a temperature range of -30 to +130 degC.
QQuestion What is the logging capacity of the instrument?
AAnswer Approximately 30,000 samples.
Note that we supply this kit as a handheld reader for use whilst on site, rather than a flow logger (See Flexim F601 or Micronics PF330 units for dedicated ultrasonic flow loggers to be left on site for a period of time).
QQuestion Where should I position a Katflow pipe sensors for taking readings?
AAnswer You should mount the transducers to a section of straight horizontal pipework; this should be 5 x the diameter distance away from an upward bend and 10 x the diameter distance away from a downward bend in the pipework to get accurate readings.
