This is a superseded publication. Please refer to the revision history (below) for current guidance

Variable air volume (VAV) systems are now commonplace in modern buildings. However, the procedures for commissioning such systems are not well documented. This is because several variations of the VAV concept exist, each of which has individual requirements for commissioning. A comprehensive manual would need to deal with each system type separately. This Technical Memorandum suggests an approach to commissioning based on the common features of the different system types. The basic layout of a VAV system is shown, and a description is given of the function of each plant item. Based on this layout, a step-by-step procedure for commissioning is described, which may be applied as an outline method to any system variation. Until a more definitive document is available, this Technical Memorandum provides useful guidance on the commissioning of VAV systems.

Points out that although variable air volume (VAV) systems are now commonplace in modern buildings, the procedures for commissioning such systems are not well documented. Suggests an approach to commissioning based on the common features of the different system types. Shows the basic layout of a VAV system and describes the function of each plant item. Describes a step-by-step procedure for commissioning on the basis of this layout, which may be applied as an outline method to any system variation.
