Job Description
Environmental Engineers work with the design and construction teams to minimise waste and pollution for both the internal and external environments of the building.
They promote the use of renewable resources where possible and evaluate the environmental impact of the construction, whilst ensuring it complies with environmental regulations.
Environmental Engineers also produce forecasts and assessments of environmental problems of the past, present and future.
Entry Routes and Competencies Required
Degree
- Accredited with the Society for Environmental Engineers (SEE) or other relevant organisations
- Master's degree is preferable and those with a Bachelor's degree may be required to complete an extra postgraduate qualification
- Relevant subjects include: Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Process Engineering
- For Environmental Engineering typical A-Level (or equivalent) requirements are AAA - ABB including Maths and Sciences (usually Biology and Chemistry)
Career progression from Environmental Advisor
Salary Range
Salaries vary depending on experience, the company and location of the job, However, per year, you could expect to earn:
- Newly trained Engineer - £17,000 - £25,000
- Trained Engineer with experience - £25,000 - £55,000
- Senior or Chartered Engineer - up to £90,000
Professional Qualifications and Career Development
Graduate training programmes are available to work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer with the Society for Environmental Engineers (SEE).
Progression on to becoming Environmental Advisors or Remediation Specialists is possible.
