This course has been created to give delegates an overview of the types of systems encountered in a range of buildings including hospitals and industrial installations. Topics covered include:

  • Types of water services
  • The importance of comfort, safety, compliance and the use of data
  • Legal requirements & regulations
  • Things that can go wrong
  • Case studies

Factors that are considered important in the management of water within buildings will be
covered with an opportunity for delegates to feedback experience not identified in the
primary list.

Who should attend

This course is aimed at people who are responsible for the oversizing of building and maintenence contracts such as:

  • FM managers
  • Project managers
  • Those who carry out treatment, routine sampling, testing, and inspections of water systems, including service providers
  • Those who are considering carrying out their own monitoring work or checking/replacing outside contractors


To bring delegates up to speed with the correct legal requirements and responsibilities of duty holders, and will cover the importance of the terminology and what is essential to remember when managing services.

Content and timings

Registration start at 09:00 and the course will commence at 09:30 until 16:30. Regular coffee breaks and a lunch break are also included.

  • Reverse osmosis

  • Ultra Violet (UV); and possibly

  • Greywater reuse
  • Ornamental features (fountains and ornamental water features); and
  • Feature irrigation systems (indoor and outdoor gardens)
  • Pools, spas, and hydrotherapy
  • Vehicle and plant washing equipment
  • Point of use water chillers
  • Bottled water dispensers
  • Vending machines
  • Hot water dispensers – tea boilers/point of use heater
  • ACoP L8 for Legionella
  • Private Water Supply Regulations 2016 (as amended)
  • Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2018
  • Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999
  • Health Technical Memorandum 04-01: The control of Legionella, hygiene, “safe” hot water, cold water and drinking water systems - Part A: Design, installation and testing
  • Health Building Note 00-09: Infection control in the built environment (often forgotten)
  • Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) Code of Practice


Delegates will be entitled to a free BSRIA publication relating to the topic of the course.
