Overview

A construction project is the organised process of constructing, renovating or refurbishing a building, structure or infrastructure.  Construction projects are typically one off's and this can make it difficult to develop ideas or relationships, and so lessons learned are often not carried forward to the next project.  The separation of project roles can make construction projects adversarial.

This course sets out the key stages and drivers of a successful construction project.

Learning aims

  • Learn about the drivers of a successful project, and the key players and relationships between them in typical construction projects.
  • Explore contract law principles & forms of contract (particularly duties of engineers at design stage and during construction).
  • Understand the consequences of value engineering and how to ensure design changes are only made with approval.
  • Find out about the RIBA Plan of Work.
  • Understand design responsibility and design reviews (introducing BSRIA Guide BG 6/2018 A Design Framework for Building Services); Information management (introducing BIM); Supply chain management; Soft Landings and Government Soft Landings.
