This training course aims to introduce attendees to how construction projects work, from design through to construction, following standard UK practices.

Construction projects can be complex, and each one is unique. For people who are new to the industry, it can be quite difficult to understand some of the terms and processes used in the management of projects.

This course aims to introduce attendees to how construction projects work, from design through to construction, following standard UK practices.

Each delegate will receive a free BSRIA guide of their choice.

Who should attend

This course is aimed primarily at graduates and other recent entrants to the construction industry. Older or more experienced delegates could also attend to refresh their knowledge and get up-to-speed on recent developments.


The aim of this course is to introduce delegates to the following concepts:

  • The drivers of a successful project
  • The key players in typical construction projects and the relationships between them in the most common forms of procurement
  • Basic contract law principles
  • Forms of contract (particularly emphasising the roles and duties of engineers at design stage and during construction)
  • Value engineering, and the consequences of changes being made.
  • Change order procedures in contracts – ensuring design changes are only made with approval
  • The RIBA Plan of Work – both 2007 and 2013 versions, both of which are in use at present
  • Design responsibility and design reviews – introducing BSRIA Guide BG 6/2014 A Design Framework for Building Services
  • Information management – introducing BIM
  • Supply chain management – early engagement, innovation and resource in a growing market
  • Soft Landings and Government Soft Landings

Content and timings

The course will be delivered as four broad themes:

  • Theme 1 Projects and their teams
  • Theme 2 Managing design
  • Theme 3 Contracts and change
  • Theme 4 Managing information and handover

Registration commences at 0900 and the course will run from 0930 to 1630. Lunch and refreshments are provided.


Delegates will be given copies of the slides, handouts related to the course content, a BSRIA CPD certificate, and a free copy of a BSRIA guide of their choice.
