Convergence - IoT in Commercial Buildings 2019

Contact BSRIA WMI

Connectivity is talked about due to a number of key trends such as increases in employee mobility and focus on wellbeing. BSRIA believe there is a need for reliable numbers for connected devices in commercial buildings. Most of the published numbers are exaggerated as they often include consumer devices and or/smart home devices. Study uses the IT/Ethernet network as the base for estimating number of connected devices in commercial buildings. Also included is a overview of wireless technologies.

BSRIA has, over the last 15 years, published a number of studies covering Convergence, uptake and trends.

Connectivity is much talked about due to a number of key trends such as increases in employee mobility and focus on wellbeing. Connectivity aims to increase productivity and energy efficiency in buildings and, in the longer term, connect to smart grid and smart cities. Connectivity, convergence and IoT are about connecting devices, collecting data and undertaking analytics & diagnostics that will enable end-users/operators to better run their buildings.

BSRIA believe there is a need for reliable numbers for connected devices in commercial buildings. Most of the published numbers are exaggerated as they often include consumer devices and/or smart home devices.

This study uses the IT/Ethernet network as the base for estimating the number of connected devices in commercial buildings. Connected devices use an average of 40 –50 meters of structured cable per device with the exception of some products that use one connection point for several devices. The study also estimates the share of wireless access points (WAPs) based on sales of WAPS, replacement rates and number of connections. Distributed Building services products include physical security, AV, BACS/controllers and lighting and are estimated based on sales, uptake of IP, new and refurbishment vs retrofit etc. An overview of wireless technologies are also include in this study.
