BSRIA has successfully completed full smoke emissions testing of a pizza oven for submission to DEFRA for exemption from the Clean Air Act.

Following an approach from a manufacturer to carry out smoke emissions testing for submission to DEFRA, a bespoke pizza oven test methodology was developed by BSRIA complying with the requirements outlined in the Ricardo AEA application pack.

BSRIA Test carries out UKAS accredited testing of solid fuel room heaters in accordance with BS EN 13240 (free standing stoves) and BS EN 13229 (inset stoves) for CE Marking and smoke emission tests to BS 3841 and RD 6434 for DEFRA approval.

As a UKAS accredited laboratory and Notified Body, BSRIA has expertise and a purpose built facility for comprehensive testing of solid fuel stoves – covering: technical guidance, official product listing and product development.

allan wilson, Test Engineer, BSRIA Test, said:

“BSRIA’s flexible approach allowed useful and robust test data to be recorded, analysed and reported for submission by the client in support of their application for exemption under the Clean Air Act.

With the limited control available in pizza ovens, the manufacturer’s guidance on managing the fire from cold through warm up and subsequently maintaining a stable operating temperature is critical to the clean and efficient operation of the oven.”

Mandatory CE Marking of stoves and room heaters

BSRIA works together with manufacturers and importers helping them to meet the specific European and UK requirements in order to achieve compliance and approval of their products.

Testing of residential wood burning and multi fuel stoves up to 44 kW:

  • Thermal performance and efficiency type testing.
  • Operating temperatures and clearance for fire safety.
  • Smoke particulate and opacity tests required to register products in the UK, for sale in smoke control areas.
  • Conformity validation tests for variations within a model range.
