Thermal Imaging: Rooftop Water Leakage Survey

Contact Research, Investigations & Test

Thermal imaging can identify the location of a potential water leak on a flat roof. The survey is straight forward but does rely on specific environmental conditions.

A leak in a roof will allow water to permeate into the layers underneath the waterproof medium. In most cases, the water will find its way into the insulation. During the day the wet insulation will absorb solar radiation and warm up. When the sun goes down the wet insulation will retain the heat of the day longer than the dry insulation. Therefore, the wet insulation shows up as a warm spot on the thermal imaging camera. This allows us to pinpoint the location of the leak or leaks in a non-destructive and economical manner.

Thermal imaging is often the only way to confidently pinpoint the location of a roof leak.
