Building Automation Controls: 2021, a year of recoveryMarch 2022

The global BACS market is recovering with growth of around 4 – 5% in 2021 after a steep drop in 2020, due to the impact on investment in commercial buildings.

Moderate growth was seen in Scandinavia and North America, while countries such as Mexico, India, Netherlands, Germany and South East Asia experienced double digital growth rates. A recovery was expected in countries that faced a huge decline in 2020 such as Mexico and India, but it is surprising to see the falls in Germany and the Netherlands, where BACS markets were less impacted by Covid than most countries.

It should, however, be noted that supply chain issues and materials shortage has resulted in inflation and increasing prices for controllers and field devices, which account for most of the BACS market. Very long lead times are also very common.

Sales of software performed well in most countries boosted by sales of analytical and energy efficiency software, which experienced a significant increase in sales in 2021. Most supervisory software is installed on premises and is bought by the building owner or occupant with the BACS solution. Supervisory software is cloud enabled, so the owner can install it in their own cloud, while supervisory software sold as SaaS is just emerging.

An increasing share of analytical and energy efficiency software is sold as SaaS or is installed on the customer’s cloud, with the majority being sold as SaaS.

BSRIA is currently finalising its World BACS study covering 8 regions and its World Overview (20 countries) and will be published the first week of March.
