Overview

Electrical building services are essential to control the flow of electrical power throughout a building.

Who should attend

This electrical building services course is suitable for facility, project and commercial managers, sales staff, general construction personnel without an electrical background and non-technical facilities personnel involved in operating buildings who require a basic appreciation of how and why electrical systems work.  No prior knowledge is required.

  • Basic electrical theory: volts, amps, watts and kilowatt-hours
  • Measuring electricity; earthing, bonding and lightning protection
  • Alternating current and direct current; transformers
  • Single-phase and three-phase electricity; electrical distribution and switchgear
  • Single-line diagrams; cables, busbars and cable management
  • Circuit protection: Fuses and circuit breakers
  • Light sources and lighting levels; lighting controls
  • Emergency lighting; fire alarm systems; structured IT cabling
  • Photovoltaics; uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)
  • Power quality; regulations and standards
