Overview

This is an external training course run by our partner The Water Management Society. 

Cleaning and disinfecting water systems and services is critical for the health and wellbeing of not only buildings, but more importantly building occupants - whether they be residents, workers, visitors or even patients.

This course, delivered by The Water Management Society and accredited by City & Guilds, gives delegates an understanding of the importance of cleaning and disinfection, as well as how to effectively maintain them by using various methods and monitoring.

Who should attend

This course is for operatives and contractors responsible for completing, cleaning and disinfecting hot & cold water systems services. It will also benefit owners of water systems and their employees. You may wish to bring a cleaning service in-house, or you may be a responsible persons who wishes to ensure their sub-contractors are undertaking tasks correctly.

Course content

  • The legislation relating to cleaning and disinfection works and how to comply with it.
  • When and why cleans and disinfections are undertaken and how they are to be carried out.
  • The importance of cleaning and disinfection in domestic hot and cold water systems.
  • Information on the importance of, and actual production of, a task risk assessment and method statement prior to carrying out the work.
  • Guidance on model methods and how to fit them to individual systems.
  • Instruction on how to calculate volumes of different shaped tanks and how to calculate the volumes needed of different strength chemicals required for disinfection and neutralisation.
  • Instruction on sampling, testing chlorine levels and the safe handling and disposal of chemicals.

The day includes extensive instruction in the Practical Training Area where the students ability to follow instructions, work by themselves, work safely in respect to their own safety and the safety of others and account for their actions in a clear unambiguous written record will be observed and assessed.

Assessment: 45 minute written exam with work in the practical training area counting towards 25% of the exam result for this course. Overall pass mark of 70%. A resit is possible for anyone failing the exam for an additional fee.
