Overview

Writes for those involved in the development of housing, on any scale, whether new build or refurbishment. Considers (semi-)independent alternatives to conventional mains servicing, which may be beneficial on any development, but particularly where there is insufficient existing servicing to a site. In such cases it is usually cost effective to avoid augmenting or extending mains services and the Guide may be used to identify alternative strategies. The technologies considered improve the sustainability of housing, making them of particular interest to developers and/or users of housing who wish to make the development more sustainable. The Guide is the main output resulting from a three-year research project investigating the use of autonomous technologies in housing. Concentrates on energy supply, water supply and drainage and sewerage technologies, illustrated by nine case studies.
