New Part J of the Building RegulationsAugust 2010

Biomass boiler

The Department for Communities and Local Government has published a new Approved Document for Part J (Combustion appliances and fuel storage systems) of the Building Regulations. The document comes into effect on 1st October 2010.

The document provides guidance about compliance with specific aspects of building regulations in some of the more common building situations. Main changes in the 2010 edition include issues related to:

  • Air supply for combustion in airtight homes
  • Carbon monoxide alarms where solid fuel appliances are installed
  • Provision of hearths and wall clearance for solid fuel appliances
  • Access for visual inspection of concealed flues
  • Secondary containment for oil tanks

Dissemination event
