Socrates Christidis, Research Manager Heating & Renewables, spoke about the market drivers and challenges of the heating and renewable industry in the context of the growing concern over climate crisis and the quest for green energy. He concluded that there is still a market for boilers, fuelled by replacement demand. Nevertheless, decarbonisation and electrification of heating means changes will happen in the industry, but it is very unpredictable in what shape or form this will take place.
Lone Hansen, Research Manager – IT Cabling, BACS & Associated Technologies, talked about convergence and IoT in commercial buildings, highlighting that the number of connections installed worldwide in 2019 was estimated to be around 154 million. The growth is estimated at around 2% per year. A key trend is that the number of connections and devices is increasing, but at a moderate pace. Products are getting smarter, easier to use and integrate, but the uptake is still small and only predicted to grow at moderate pace over the next 5 years.
Saziye Dickson, Research Manager ACV & R, presented the latest trends in air conditioning and refrigeration. She highlighted the latest global market drivers and restraints and how did various geographies and products fare in this context. One of the key aspects addressed by her presentation is what is likely to happen regarding refrigerants in AC applications. This is a major factor impacting on global growth opportunities. She also presented the results of BSRIA’s latest US studies on commercial and industrial refrigeration; the latter valued at $2.2bn in 2019.
Anette Meyer-Holley, WMI Business Manager, wrapped up the BSRIA industry presentation. She highlighted that climate change is hot on the agenda for Governments, businesses and individuals and she focused on wellness in buildings and why this is becoming increasingly important. This is also a key subject for BSRIA, as it is an organisation which focuses on the built environment. The presentation concluded that technologies such as IoT and convergence are likely to play an increasing role not just for individuals, homes and commercial buildings but also at campus and city level, improving indoor air quality and wellness in buildings.
