Independent laboratory testing of a product before placing it to market helps ensure it complies with regulations, standards or project specifications.

When combined with comparative testing, it can be used in gaining a competitive advantage.

Comparative testing is designed to benchmark a product against others in the market.

This can be achieved using computer modelling validations to compare the product's performance in a defined environment.

BSRIA has recently been commissioned by DiscreteHeat Company Limited to carry out an independent testing of their innovative product ThermaSkirt using both techniques. The product combines the skirting boards and heating in one and is used with conventional boilers and heat sources.

The objective of the work was to confirm the product standard performance and compare it with radiators.

BSRIA carried out the thermal performance tests in accordance with BSEN 442 standard in its fully automated test facility in Bracknell. The facility is a closed highly insulated and water-cooled cabin that is specifically built for standard and kitemark testing including CE marking of radiators, heated towel rails, and similar products.

After confirming the product standard performance BSRIA used CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations to predict thermal comfort, temperature gradients and air circulation in a room for three scenarios: two using radiators and one using ThermaSkirt heating.

Comparison was made between a double panel convector radiator and 15m of ThermaSkirt installed around the perimeter at skirting level.

The thermal comfort temperature results demonstrated that ThermaSkirt has the most uniform distribution and the most acceptable level amongst all simulations.
