Building Performance: how to succeed...or failJune 2014

Ian Orme, Business Manager of BSRIA's Sustainable Contruction Group, discusses the how to improve Building Performance, ahead of his presentation at the BSRIA Briefing 2014: Smarter ways to better buildings, 14 November in Central London.

What is the industry learning from evaluating the performance of our buildings, and how can we use the process to improve building performance?

BSRIA with others have started to analyse and consider the findings from the Technology Strategy Board’s Building Performance Evaluation programme. It is early days in this process, but it is clear that issues around communication, responsibility for the energy performance, and the wider issues of skills and knowledge within the industry have all contributed to the success, or failure of the projects studied. Key to the successful projects are ‘Smart clients’; the informed clients who are able to consistently work with, and develop their supply chains to deliver a consistent standard of performance from a design.

Undertaking a process of evaluating the performance of a building helps to inform the client and build a cycle of feedback that can lead to improved performance.
