Mike Smith, Engineering Director at BSRIA, has been awarded a Silver Medal in the CIBSE President's Awards October 2011.
He joins a small group of BSRIA staff (past and present) which, among others, includes John Armstrong (who originally nominated him), Peter Jackman, Roderic Bunn and Gay Lawrence-Race.
Mike is heavily involved in CIBSE and sits on the Publications and Research Delivery Committee (PROD). He has been a very active participant of this committee and a key player ensuring that the publications of CIBSE and BSRIA are complementary. He has very actively encouraged the return of the CIBSE Technical Symposium, which successfully started again in September this year with much help from Mike. He has supported the CIBSE Maintenance Task Group over many years.
He has been an active and supportive member of his local regional committee, including two years as regional Chairman.
He is a member of the REFCOM advisory committee and on the ACRIB Board, and been influential in changes within the refrigeration industry needed to reduce refrigerant emission and manage their use.
He has been an advocate for the importance of how engineering plant and systems are operated and maintained and over the last twenty years has helped to raise the awareness of this previously poorly recognised area, particularly promoting the concept and understanding of facilities management.
He is an active supporter of the European construction industry, including the research programme delivering high performance buildings.
Mike said "This is really a team award as without the support of my wife, friends and colleagues at BSRIA, I would not be able to take part in all the varied CIBSE activities that have led to the award. I have always been lucky in being able to do things that interest me and everything I have done with CIBSE and BSRIA has always been both interesting and fun".
