BSRIA comments on First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s speech at the Scottish National Party (SNP) Conference
Commenting on First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s speech at the Scottish National Party Conference in Aberdeen, Julia Evans, Chief Executive, BSRIA, said:
“First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has pledged that the SNP will set a 50,000 affordable homes target if the party gets re-elected to the Scottish Parliament in May next year. BSRIA members will be able to identify with this. It is encouraging to hear her making the housing crisis her focus with a commitment to boost such house-building."
In her keynote speech at the conference, Sturgeon said: “Making sure that everyone has a safe, warm and affordable home is central to our government’s drive to make this country fairer and more prosperous. Our plans must be affordable. But they must also be ambitious. I am therefore announcing today a bold new commitment.” BSRIA welcomes this aspiration, along with the £3bn funding pot for the commitment.
Julia went on to say: “The SNP must work closely with the industry to make sure the scheme works effectively for house-builders and prospective buyers alike. Indeed, for the industry, delivery is what counts and – results are crucial.
It is essential that such rhetoric is converted to actual delivery. And whether the SNP has both the knowledge and the will to, not only have such challenging objectives, but also the resource and expertise to actually deliver on the big policy issues of the day – remains to be seen.
The tricky question also remains of how we are going to resource this house building target with the current construction industry skills crisis? The SNP must ensure that importance is given to construction skills and apprenticeships in this field and that they are highlighted throughout the education system.”
BSRIA is heartened by the SNP’s commitment to “campaign positively for Scotland, and the U.K, to stay in the European Union”. Such crusade will give the industry confidence – for future economic prosperity.
