BSRIA presents results on life cycle analysis of DurabRoads materialsJuly 2017

BSRIA is delighted to present the results obtained on the DurabRoads EU Research Project – a flagship initiative which encourages the achievement of sustainable growth in road transportation by improving road material properties.

The principle objective of the DurabRoads project is to design, develop and demonstrate cost-effective, eco-friendly and optimized long-life roads which are more adapted to freight corridors and climate-change by means of innovative designs and the use of greener materials improved by nanotechnology.

“Based on the results obtained so far, the road layers composed of the warm mix asphalt materials have better environmental and economic performance across the life cycle of the road system studied.

In DurabRoads, the life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) techniques are used for the environmental evaluation and costing analysis of the new warm mix asphalt mixtures (WMA) developed in the project.

BSRIA has been involved in developing the models for the base case and alternative cases of the AC (asphalt concrete), BBTM (AC for thin layers) and PA (porous asphalt) road systems. This study has focused on a method in which the road construction, road maintenance and road relaying processes have been broken down into small process units to build up a dynamic LCA and LCC model for each scenario in which it is possible to vary the different process conditions and hence simulate the different road system activities during a specific time period.

Going forward, the durability factor obtained from the pilot test results of the pilot road tested in Spain will be incorporated to analyse and infer the best case. These results will be reported and presented soon. In order to communicate the principles of life cycle assessment to a wider audience, BSRIA has also developed an e-learning training course on Life Cycle Assessment with examples from DurabRoads to illustrate the process.”

As the research project nears its completion – concluding in September 2017 – the results of the life cycle assessment and life cycle costing analysis of the warm mix asphalt materials were presented by BSRIA at the SAM 11 Conference ( held on the 15th & 16th May 2017 in Trondheim, Norway and at the EU Workshop conducted by ERF at Brussels on 20th & 21st June 2017 where the base case was compared against the alternative scenarios.
