BSRIA comments on Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech at the Conservative Party Conference
Commenting on the Prime Minister’s speech at the Conservative Party Conference, Julia Evans, Chief Executive, BSRIA, said:
“The Prime Minister has set out a series of national challenges for the industry that BSRIA members will be able to identify with. It is encouraging to hear him making the housing crisis his focus with a pledge to a house-building programme including 200,000 new affordable houses a year – especially for first time buyers.
BSRIA supports the Prime Minister’s comments on ‘growing our economy, especially in terms of infrastructure that will help create stepping stones for the greatness for our country’.
The shake-up of planning obligations to incentivise affordable, starter homes to buy rather than rent – is a confident step. Government must work closely with the industry to make sure the scheme works effectively for house-builders and prospective buyers alike.
Indeed, for the industry, delivery is what counts. Successive governments have a poor track record when it comes to executing big, bold changes in the national interest. The Prime Minister has set out his stall for his government – results are crucial.”
On the forthcoming EU Referendum, the Prime Minister said ‘he would not duck a fight over EU reform ahead of the UK's membership referendum’: such a crusade will give the industry confidence – for future economic prosperity.
