Nick Hayes B.Eng. FEI

Professional overview

Nick has over 25 years’ experience in developing and managing business in the sustainability space both from a strategic and technical perspective.

Nick was Head of Sustainability for Arcadis UK, led the Growth of the UK sustainability business and led a global, cross-business team to align strategy across acquired companies. As part of Arcadis’ membership of WBCSD, Nick led activities within the ‘Zero Emission’ cities and the Energy Efficiency in Buildings group. Work with the WBCSD and its member companies is ongoing.

Since leaving Arcadis at the end of May 2016 and establishing his own consultancy business, Strategic Green, Nick has been working with clients advising on the development of sustainability strategy and the impacts of climate change. Nick provides support to Climate-KIC through their Urban Transitions programme.

Nick was previously employed as BRE’s International Director and Director of the Sustainable Development Group. He spent 9 years as a Board Director at BRE.
Nick has expertise in energy management and is a specialist in the efficient use of energy, minimisation, supply and low carbon technologies. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Energy and has expertise in financial support for sustainable solutions.

• Marks and Spencer – Various including production of the M&S sustainable construction manual, design specifications for new stores and refurbishments, biodiversity guidelines, a sustainable store fit-out tool, and developing sustainability training for M&S staff and supply chain
• Toyota Motors Europe (TME) – Sustainability guidance and bespoke certification
• Waitrose – Development of high level sustainability commitments for the business to drive the way stores are planned and delivered in the future.
• Major Chemical/Pharmaceutical – Global Energy Management campaign - Programme Manager
• Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) –Provided sustainability services to DAA on the refurbishment of Dublin Airport’s Terminal 1
• World Business Council for Sustainable Development – Zero Emission Cities – Group co-chair
• World Business Council for Sustainable Development – Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB) – Arcadis Lead
• Imperial College Masterplan Sustainability– Lead Partner. Development of Imperial’s sustainability strategy and advice on the delivery of the masterplan.
• Blueprint for a Sustainable Heathrow - Long term sustainability vision and review
• BA World Cargo (BAWC), Heathrow – Review of the sustainability performance of their three key operational buildings at Heathrow Airport.
