Ian Butterss B.Eng. B.A. MEI
Ian has over 30 years’ experience of energy and sustainability in the UK, Australia, and other countries, in industrial, commercial, government and domestic sectors.
Ian has in-depth experience of energy management techniques obtained during four years of work at the University of Queensland and six years with Lothian Regional Council and City of Edinburgh Council. Ian’s responsibilities have included energy audits, project implementation, feasibility studies and energy purchasing. At Lothian Regional Council he was responsible for allocating an annual energy efficiency investment budget of up to £½ million per annum to the most cost-effective projects and managing their implementation. These ranged in size from draught-stripping to CHP and heat recovery. Ian has conducted energy audits at offices, universities, warehouses, hotels, museums and scores of schools. Ian has also worked in consultancy for BRE, Faithful & Gould and latterly Mott MacDonald.
Ian has worked on many projects including: • A lighting audit project in Nepal covering all hotels of greater than three stars (34 of them). • A survey of the Science Museum’s Swindon repository of large objects. • Energy strategies – Low carbon strategies developed, optimised, costed, and compared for large scale developments (Chatham Waters, Newcastle Science Central, Liverpool Waters) • Lothian Regional Council – Responsibility for a network of three systems controlling the HVAC of over 100 buildings, mainly schools. Specified, diagnosed and used BEMS from first generation systems to current systems. • Lothian Regional Council – Implementation and operation of a major M&T system covering over a thousand separate sites and fed with digital data for four fuels. • World Bank - A project for M&T in Latin America, where M&T was implemented at ten large industrial sites. • National Gallery - Combined Heat and Power; specified, tendered and acted as Planning Supervisor for the installation of a 220 kW CHP system. • Sat on the CHP committee for Central Edinburgh with the remit to develop an innovative large-scale city-wide scheme. • CHP Feasibility studies carried out for the following: 7 MW CHP turbine and 3 x 1 MW gas engine system for the South Kensington Estate (Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Imperial College, V&A) and a 10.5 MW turbine for the BA Maintenance hangars at Heathrow. • Faithful & Gould - Lead Sustainability Consultant focusing on cost and procurement issues, including Whole Life Cost. • DTI – Managed various projects including the PV Domestic Field Trial.
