Overview
BSRIA presents a set of three guides covering carbon, cost and environmental analysis. The set contains Life Cycle Assessment (BG 52/2013), Life Cycle Costing (BG 67/2016) and Embodied Carbon – the inventory of carbon and energy (BG 10/2011).
Life Cycle Costing (BG 67/2016) This guide supersedes Whole Life Costing (BG 5/2016). It presents a simple process for the practical calculation of life cycle costs, with examples to show how the different stages of the process relate to one another, to show how the results are obtained and what they really mean. Life cycle costing focuses on economic assessment using profiles of current and future costs and benefits to arrive at a discounted net present value of the life cycle costs.
Life Cycle Assessment (BG 52/2013) focuses on a structured methodology for compiling and evaluating the environmental impacts and the primary energy demand of a product system throughout its life cycle. Life Cycle Assessment can be applied to any product or process, assemblies, entire HVAC systems or even whole buildings.
Embodied Carbon - the inventory of carbon and energy (BG 10/2011), produced in conjunction with the University of Bath, in line with the recent IGT report, looks at why it is necessary to account for the embodied carbon in construction. Its purpose is to provide the construction industry with necessary data and then present the raw data in a way that is readily usable in calculations. It will also inform the industry how to incorporate assessment of embodied carbon into the design process in order to make informed choices about the materials used.
